iPad Tips and Tricks

General
  • Screen Shot - Hold down the Home Button and the Power Button at the same time to take a screen shot of whatever is on your iPod.
  • Use Search - Slide the home screen to the right to bring up the search box. Search for apps, messages, contacts, etc.
  • Quick Delete- Quickly delete an email message by swiping over it in your inbox. To use this trick, you must change the settings for Mail. Tap Settings, then Mail/Contacts/Calendars. Click on the account you are using and turn archiving off. This works in Notes and other apps too.
  • Read PDFs - You can download an app that allows you to read PDFs on your iPad or you can just use the built in app iBooks. Simply choose to open a PDF attachment in iBooks. If the PDF is on your computer you can connect the iPad to the computer, then drag and drop the PDF onto the iPad icon in iTunes.
  • Access iTunes on Your Computer - Turn on "Home Sharing" in iTunes on your computer. In iTunes on the computer, click on the Advanced menu and choose "Turn on Home Sharing". Type in your Apple ID and password. Then, on your iPad tap "Settings/iPod". Type in your Apple ID under "Home Sharing". When you open the iPod app on your iPod, tap "Library" at the top left and choose the library on your computer. You cannot see both the iPad and computer libraries at once, you have to choose one or the other.
  • Increase battery life - Turn off Bluetooth unless you need it. Press the Home button to close an app before you put your iPad to sleep.

Safari
  • Add Alternate Extensions- Change the URL extension in Safari by holding down the .com button.
  • Save or Copy an Image - Tap and hold an image on a web page. Choose Save or Copy from the pop up menu.
  • Scrolling – instead of manually scrolling back to the top of a web page or document, a quick tap on the bar at the top of the screen returns you to the top.
  • Web Clips - If there is a page you go to frequently, you can save it as an icon on your home page. Simply click the arrow button in Safari's button bar and choose "Add to Home Screen" from the menu.
  • Quickly Find a Word on a Web Page - Type the word in the search box in upper right hand corner, choose "From this Page". Safari will highlight the first instance of the word on the page. Click on the "Next" button in the bottom left to see the other instances.

Typing
  • Quick Number- To quickly insert a number from the alpha keyboard, hold down the number button and then drag to the number. You will return to the alpha keyboard.
  • Capital Letters - Instead of tapping the Shift key to insert a capital letter, you can hold it down while you tap the letter just like you do on a regular keyboard.
  • Caps Locks- Double-click the shift button (up arrow) on the keyboard to lock the capital letters.
  • Select Words - Double tap and hold a word to select it. Drag the corners of the box to select adjacent words. If selecting one word you will have the additional option of replacing it. The iPad makes some logical suggestions of replacements or you can simply type in the word you want.
  • Add a Period - Tap the space bar twice to add a period and space at the end of a sentence.
  • Position Cursor - Tap and hold on a word to get a magnifying circle. Move the cursor and release.
  • Undo - Shake the iPad

Classroom Use

  • Air Mouse Pro ($1.99) – this app turns the iPod Touch into a wireless remote for a Mac computer. Teachers can move from application to another with one finger, just as if they were using a laptop track pad or a mouse connected to the computer.
